Coping with Life Changes: Managing after a Layoff

Each person experiences change and stress in his or her own unique way. Layoffs are a particularly unpredictable period for most people. The involuntary loss of a job typically creates uncertainty for the individual as well as for family and household members.

With the notice of a layoff you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed. Many people find it helpful to develop some concrete plans to deal with the personal, financial and family issues that arise. The following ideas may be helpful as you prioritize your concerns and activities.

1. Meeting basic needs:

  • Your Human Resources Department will provide information about severance arrangements, health insurance, unemployment procedures, etc.
  • Meet with household members to review finances and if necessary, develop a plan to defer expenses or purchases. Your EAP can assist you in locating financial consultation resources.
  • Create a revised personal and/or household budget.

2. Finding employment

  • Take advantage of outplacement services offered by your employer. These groups are experienced in addressing the very issues you now face and are a very good resource.
  • Network with friends and colleagues about job opportunities.
  • If you have considered a career change in the past, this may be the time to actively investigate these options.

3. Taking care of yourself and managing stress

It is important to take care of yourself as you navigate your next steps. Family members may be feeling very stressed as well. While it may be challenging, try the following strategies:

  • Get enough rest.
  • Talk with supportive people.
  • Eat well (watch your intake of fats, caffeine and alcohol).
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Do those things that typically give you energy or help you feel better.
  • Use your personal resources such as friends, family, hobbies, and spirituality.

It is common for confidence and energy to be strained in the weeks after a layoff. The daily routines and workplace relationships are a large part of who we are. If you or your family want to talk about managing the challenges of the layoff, the Employee Assistance Program is available by telephone or in person.
